Paddle or float along the Methow River
Hike, go boating, swim, and unfurl the picnic blanket in this 1,200-acre recreational hub with more than 160 campsites. Each site has its own flushing restroom, picnic area, and swimming beach. Two furnished cabins and a vacation home are for rent. So, too, are paddleboards and kayaks. Motorized vessels can use the boat launch. Hikers get amazing lake views.
Enter The Castle, a log cabin from the 1800s. Check out artifacts from Winthrop’s homesteading days. These artifacts date back from the 1880s all the way to 1940. Check out their calendar of events and activities, including exhibits, concerts, book signings, art and community talks, and workshops. Admission is free. Donations are welcome.
Walk around the 1900s main street and drop by Farmers State Bank with its Old West designs. Shop at boutiques, galleries, and specialty stores. Trail’s End Bookstore is a favorite of bibliophiles and casual readers. The adjacent Winthrop Gallery showcases local and regional artists’ works. Sheri’s Sweet Shop offers candy delights. Cascades Outdoor Store and The Outdoorsman offer various sporting goods.
The area is not known as one of the world’s best for nothing. The northern mountain ranges’ jagged peaks are eye-catching. Ross and Diablo Lakes, around 60 miles west, offer stunning views. Drive around 30 miles across the park and thrill to the sight of old growth forests, waterfalls, and majestic mountains. More than 90% of the park complex is designated as the Stephen Mather Wilderness, which shields much of the forest from logging and mining activities. Ferry boating, camping, and hiking offer many rewards.
The trailhead is a mere 12-mile drive from town. Its first waterfall is less than a quarter mile from the trailhead. Follow the trail leading to more rushing falls. It covers more than five miles near Birch Mountain’s peak. For more falls, prepare to trek to an elevation of more than 2,000 feet. But you need not go this far to see more waterfalls, which are visible within the first two miles.
The Methow River is known as one of the state’s top white water rafting and kayaking areas. The waters issue from the North Cascades National Park and plunge more than 500 feet within 19 miles. Paddlers can practice paddler strokes in Class II to III rapids. The world-class river then runs into Black Canyon Rapids, where rafters experience an adrenaline-pumping adventure.
