The hidden gems of Washington State

Lake Colchuck

Washington State is beloved among nature lovers because of its myriad outdoor attractions. But if you get off the beaten path, you’ll discover hidden gems that will yield unforgettable memories. To get you started, check out these four destinations:

Colchuck Lake
Chelan County

Upon first seeing the Colchuck Lake, you may think you’ve been whisked away to the Swiss Alps. In reality, though, this stunning destination is well within Central Washington and is barely 15 miles away from Leavenworth. It truly lives up to its name, however, thanks to its snow-capped peaks, cerulean lake water, and towering pine trees. Its steep final ascent and the 2,300-foot elevation mean fewer people come here so it’s less busy than many other spots in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness. Those who wish to camp overnight should secure a permit beforehand, however, as spots are limited.

Pearrygin Lake State Park
Okanogan County

Stretching 1,186 acres, Pearrygin Lake State Park offers visitors plenty of outdoor fun to enjoy. Located in Methow Valley, its centerpiece is the eponymous lake, a 200-acre reservoir that offers endless water-based activities. In the summer, people come for boating, fishing, and hiking; in the winter, they visit for skiing, snowshoeing, and fat-tire biking. There are 170 campsites to choose from, along with two cabins and a vacation house for overnighters. If you’d like to live close to this park, consider purchasing Winthrop homes for sale.

Curlew Lake State Park
Ferry County

Those who love fishing would do well to camp at Curlew Lake State Park, which has a 5.5-mile-long lake that is teeming with fish like tiger muskie, bass, and trout. If you’re the outdoorsy type, you can also embark on a two-mile hike around the premises. The pristine environment means you can spot many of the local wildlife, including the famed bald eagle. There are a total of 57 tent spaces in the park, 24 of which overlook the lake’s tranquil waters.

Ginkgo Petrified Forest State Park
Kittitas County

Speaking of hidden gems, petrified wood happens to be the state gem of Washington. And if you’d like to see these curious geological wonders, there’s no better place than Ginkgo Petrified Forest State Park. Your first stop should be the interpretive center, where you can learn all about the complex factors that conspire to create petrified wood. Afterward, embark on a 2.5-mile hike through the sagebrush-covered terrain (keep an eye out for elk and bighorn sheep while you’re at it). You can then cool off at Wanapum Lake, where visitors often swim, boat, and fish. Campgrounds are available exclusively at the Wanapum Recreation Area.

Whether you’re looking for breathtaking views of nature or unexpected sights, Central Washington has a destination that will surely pique your interest. The best part is that you can live a short drive away from these excellent attractions by purchasing homes in Winthrop.
